lyrics

jack unhitched the sternline
let the rope pass through his hands
he drew portraits just to pass the time
four years out on the ocean
jack was only twenty-four
when he drove a gunboat out of port
he sailed off on the ironclad
let me tell you about the journey he had

on the final mile out
the crew's nerves began to fray
jack moored his boat out on the coast
mortars gave their post away
he spent three days without sleep
another week out on the beach
picking up the bones of
marines along the shoreline

caught up in the ropes
that drag us down below
captain we've capsized
we go down with the boat

brave acts have been photographed
reprinted far and wide
embedded in our consciousness
they give our country pride
regenerated with every war
no matter what we're fighting for
the images that resurface
and wake you up at night

now jack is getting on in years
his wit's still razor sharp
he takes care of the family
and still pursues his art
when i asked him to recall the days
back when he was still my age
he saw himself in me again
and it tore him all apart
